Today marks #10 years since I earned my master’s degree! 🎓
Is a master’s worth it? Short answer: Yes… if you do it with purpose.
Here are my 10 takeaways:
1 — A master’s doesn’t define you; it disciplines you. It teaches you to think better.
2 — The diploma opens doors, but your project opens conversations.
3 — Your network matters: professors, peers, and mentors are your best “lab.”
4 — Interdisciplinarity is how you tackle complex problems.
5 — Learning to say “no” lets you say “yes” to what truly adds value.
6 — It sharpens your focus and specialization—moving from general to deep, useful capabilities.
7 — It strengthens your critical stance on real industry problems—you see causes, effects, and how to intervene.
8 — It’s a starting point—the real return plays out in the years that follow.
9 — It leaves memorable moments… people, late nights, challenges, and small wins that stay with you.
10 — It’s a life experience—forming character, resilience, and purpose beyond academics.
So, is it worth it?
Yes, if you have a problem that moves you, a plan to turn knowledge into value, and the willingness to learn with others.
If you’re considering it, ask yourself:
— What problem in the world do you want to help solve?
— What specific capabilities do you need to develop?
— What do you expect from that journey?
Grateful to colleagues, students, partners, and mentors who’ve been part of this transformative path.
