🌪️ Is the construction industry ready for #AI?

In the past few weeks, I attended the International Summer School on AI for Construction & Project Management, an insightful program to dive into the fundamentals of artificial intelligence applications across various stages and projects in construction. The summer school was organized by Ania Khodabakhshian, Ph.D. and Fulvio Re Cecconi from Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with Instituto Superior Técnico, and University of Florida, promoted by the CIB, International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction.

Here are the questions I had before attending, which I can now start to answer based on my experience:

🚦 Is the #construction industry ready for AI? Definitely! However, as with any new technology, we must embrace change along with the uncertainty it brings. Despite AI's recent immense progress across industries, it still has limitations and requires significant human input, demanding deep professional expertise.

🛸 Is AI innovative and useful for construction and #projectmanagement? Absolutely, but process comes before technology. The problem needs to be clearly defined before exploring AI solutions.

💻 Which construction project stage could benefit the most from AI? Right now, I believe #design is experiencing a tremendous breakthrough. The presentation from Matteo Cavaglià and the demonstration of the Stable Diffusion model generation software blew my mind. AI's potential to mirror human creativity is just the beginning of what it can achieve in design.

🎛️ How can we really #innovate with AI in construction? AI is just one tool. Its true potential is unlocked when used in combination with other technologies. The presentation from Karla Saldaña Ochoa on AI and Digital Twins was inspiring.

🌍 Is AI application different in #DevelopingCountries? I would say yes. From the data you use to build the AI models to the specific problems being solved, AI implementation must be coupled with a thorough contextual analysis in developing countries.

Thanks to the organizers and institutions involved in the program. Let’s work towards a future in construction that is brighter, more sustainable, and serves as a catalyst for social change. High education plays a critical role in achieving this goal.
